Mastering Percentages Effortlessly

Percentages are a fundamental part of our daily lives. From calculating shopping discounts and restaurant tips to analyzing stock market returns and business growth, understanding how to compute percentages is essential. Our Percentage Calculator is a versatile toolkit designed to solve all your percentage-related math problems instantly, accurately, and without complex formulas.

We have divided the tool into three distinct calculators based on the most common real-world scenarios: finding a percentage of a number, calculating percentage growth or decline, and finding the difference between two independent figures.

Quick Math Trick

Did you know percentages are reversible? X% of Y is exactly the same as Y% of X. For example, trying to calculate 8% of 50 in your head is hard. Flip it: 50% of 8 is very easy. The answer is 4 in both cases!

1. How to Calculate X% of Y?

This is the most common use case. For instance, if you are buying a shirt for ₹2,500 and there is a 15% discount, you need to calculate 15% of 2,500.

  • Formula: (X / 100) × Y
  • Example: What is 15% of 2,500?
  • Calculation: (15 / 100) × 2500 = 0.15 × 2500 = 375.

2. Understanding Percentage Increase and Decrease

When you want to know how much a value has grown or shrunk over time, you use the Percentage Change formula. This is widely used to calculate salary hikes, inflation, or sales drop.

  • Formula: [ (New Value - Old Value) / |Old Value| ] × 100
  • Increase Example: Your rent went from ₹10,000 to ₹12,000.
  • Calculation: [ (12,000 - 10,000) / 10,000 ] × 100 = (2,000 / 10,000) × 100 = 20% Increase.
  • Decrease Example: A stock dropped from ₹500 to ₹400.
  • Calculation: [ (400 - 500) / 500 ] × 100 = (-100 / 500) × 100 = -20% (Decrease).

3. What is Percentage Difference?

Percentage difference is used when you are comparing two independent numbers that don't have an "old" or "new" relationship. For example, comparing the heights of two mountains or the prices of two different car models.

  • Formula: [ |Value A - Value B| / ((Value A + Value B) / 2) ] × 100
  • Explanation: You find the absolute difference between the two numbers, and divide it by their exact average.
  • Example: Comparing two laptops priced at ₹40,000 and ₹50,000.
  • Calculation: Difference is 10,000. Average is 45,000. (10,000 / 45,000) × 100 = 22.22% Difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

To calculate a percentage of a number, multiply the number by the percentage fraction. For example, to find 20% of 50, multiply 50 by 0.20. The result is 10.

The formula for percentage increase is: [(New Value - Old Value) / |Old Value|] × 100. This tells you how much a value has grown relative to its original size.

Percentage change (increase/decrease) compares an old value to a new value. Percentage difference compares two completely independent numbers to see how different they are from each other, using their average as the base.

Yes! If a value doubles, it has increased by 100%. If it triples, it has increased by 200%. Percentages above 100% simply represent growth larger than the original amount.

You can use this calculator for figuring out shopping discounts (percentage decrease), calculating tips at a restaurant (X% of Y), determining salary hikes (percentage increase), or calculating tax amounts.
